Mouldon Hill Country Park is a recent development close to the Haydon Wick area in the northwest of Swindon; the funding of the project being aided by a lottery grant. The main aim of the park is to provide a recreational area for the 10,000 or so new houses in the Northern Development Area.

The, now defunct, Swindon & Cricklade Railway, originally ran through the area and it is hoped that the line will be restored and link up with another restored section a mile or so further north, which in turn will form part of a longer stretch going from Cirencester to Swindon, terminating in Mouldon Hill. It is also hoped that a nearby five mile section of the Wilts & Berks Canal will also be restored.

An early morning start in Spring is a good time to visit, where a good variety of birds can be seen. Warbler species are particularly prominent, especially along the disused canal, with Sedge, Reed, Garden, Willow and the skulking Grasshopper Warbler all being recorded at the site. Also to be seen: Chiffchaff, Blackcap, Lesser and Common Whitethroat. The much rarer Dartford Warbler has also visited in the past. The ever decreasing Cuckoo may perhaps be seen or heard.

There is a small lake, on which you may encounter a Grey Heron or two and other water loving species such as Mallard and Moorhen. Common Terns are often present during the Summer months and Roe Deer may be encountered at any time. The River Ray runs alongside the western and southern edges, with a footpath adjacent to it, providing a varied habitat for many diverse species. There are trackways throughout and it is possible to walk around the greater area, incorporating many of the surrounding fields.

The parking area, construction of which was originally delayed due to the presence of the Great Crested Newt (a protected species), is located past the main entrance, which is off the southern end of Thamesdown Drive, opposite the Tawny Owl pub.
